How Long Does It Take To Become A Full Time Blogger?

There are many aspects involved with becoming a full time blogger, but the one thing you need to understand first, is how long it takes to achieve this level of success. Starting with unrealistic expectations may lead you to believe that you have failed, when in fact, your success was just around the corner.

So, how long does it take to become a full time blogger?

It can take anywhere from 6 months, to well over a year to earn your first income and more than 3 years to become a full time blogger. The time needed will vary depending on how much income you need to replace, the competition in your chosen niche, and the quality of your content and user experience.

Keep reading to learn more about what’s involved when starting from scratch, and my recommended training platform, if you need it.

Why Does It Take So Long To Become A Full Time Blogger?

why does it take so long to become a full time blogger

We have established that is can take a while to turn blogging into a full time income. But why does it take so long and why am I not giving an exact time frame?

Well, if you are starting from scratch, and creating a new website for your blog, then this will be the first on many factors that will add to your estimated timeline. You can only increase the age of your site by having your site active over time, and the age is related to many of the aspects noted in this article.

To become a full time blogger, you need to rank well in the search engines for this to be a long term income source. The better you rank, the more traffic you can earn. Monetizing that traffic is what will lead to your financial freedom, and allow you to go full time as a blogger.

It is impossible to give an exact time frame for any of this information and I would be skeptical of anyone who says otherwise. An estimated time is the only semi-accurate representation of how long it can take.

The single largest reason that it takes so long to turn a new blog into a full time income, is because Google does not know where to rank your content, and your new site has not built a quality reputation yet.

Google, just doesn’t trust you. They don’t know anything about you, and they have an obligation, to protect their users first. That is their business, and they will not risk it for an un-vetted website, blog or otherwise.

Your content will be tested in the SERPs throughout the lifetime of your blog. This means that Google, will show your articles to people, who are searching keywords that match your content. They will then start to rank your articles based off of many predetermined factors.

Research suggests that it takes up to 36 weeks before your content is ranked where it should be, so be prepared to wait and don’t alter your articles too often, until you see what’s working.

A few of the most common known factors would be as follows.

  • How many people are choosing to read your articles when they do a search.

Think of a time that you have done a Google search. What made you click on the link you chose? It was likely because that title presented itself as having the information you were looking for. You should craft your titles the same way.

  • How long are visitors staying on your site and are they going to other pages on your site?

The longer a visitor stays on your website, the more likely it is that they are getting the information they need. If they click through to your other related content, then Google will see that you are offering value that others are seeking and find helpful. This will increase your odds of favorable rankings, and by extension, more traffic.

  • The speed of your website in general.

Research suggests that if your site takes longer than two seconds to load, the users will go somewhere else. If you need to see how your site is performing, be sure to check out Googles PageSpeed Insights.

  • Are you answering the questions that your audience has, or do they need to continue searching for more information?

If a visitor leaves your site and continues to search for the same information, this can be a sign that they did not receive the information they were looking for. Google will consider this when factoring your rank.

  • How old is your website?

New sites will not have the same power or authority as an established website. Just keep working and building your site, and keep your domain active until you reach your goal.

  • What is your reputation within your chosen niche?

Google does consider your reputation. Make sure to have an about page on your website, and build your reputation by answering questions on forums and other outlets related to your niche.

This list could go on, but as you can see, Google hold the keys to the kingdom and they won’t just hand them over without putting you through their process. If you would like to see all the ranking factors that Google will consider, feel free to take a look at this SEO starter guide, directly from Google where they explain what they want to see from you.

You must put in the time and work up front, to achieve the results your after, if you ever plan to blog full time. Don’t be discouraged by the learning curve, it will be necessary to learn something new all the time, and you will improve because of it.

There are no real shortcuts around this, so don’t be sold on some get-rich-quick scheme promising you millions in months. It just doesn’t work that way and now your wise to the scheme.

Is It Possible To Speed Up The Process And See Success?

Can We Speed This Up

By now, you are getting the point, that there are many aspects increasing the time it takes to achieve a full time income from blogging. But is it possible to speed up the process and see success earlier in your journey?

As I just stated above, there are no real shortcuts, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some good practices that you should be using to increase the odds of ranking well and monetizing that traffic asap. If fact, there are many ways you can potentially speed up the process, but the results will still be determined by Google and other search engines and it will still take time.

Here are some ways to potentially speed up the process of getting ranked well and earning that traffic.

How Often Do You Post New Quality Content?

Posting high quality content means answering the questions of your target audience and providing value. Do this on a regular basis as often as possible to keep your site current and fresh. Google likes to see content being added regularly and this is a good indicator that you know your topic and your here for the long haul.

While you can do this at your own pace, I recommend that you publish no less than two articles weekly. If your niche is more competitive, then you will need to scale this up even more, to perhaps four articles a week. If you are just getting started and trying to find the path to blogging full time, I also suggest starting with a lower competition niche to increase your odds and lessen the required work load.

Once you do go full time, then you can target those tougher niches, because you will have the income that gives you the time freedom to tackle those goals. If you choose to target a competitive market from the start, be prepared to put in the work over an extended period without compensation.

What Type Of Commissions Are You Earning?

The more you can earn for every sale, the faster you will achieve that full time income online. This does not mean that you should focus on high ticket items to promote through your blog, but you should consider how many sales a month would be needed to supplement your income.

Please, do not offer products or services that you do not believe in. You will not only hurt your online business in the process, but you will not be helping others either, and this is a recipe for blogging destruction.

Are You Utilizing Social Media Networks?

Social networks are a great, and free way to build up your brand. I suggest focusing on Pinterest and Quora to drive traffic to your site, as these are the most effective platforms for bloggers to reach a responsive audience. This will not help your serp ranking, but it will help drive traffic. If you do a good job of monetizing your traffic, then you will be well on your way to becoming a full time blogger.

What is the user experience like on your website?

If your visitors are leaving your site immediately because its slow, your content was not what they needed, it comes across as spammy, or they just can’t navigate the site effectively, then your ranking will suffer. To avoid this, do not use ads on your site until you are well-established in your niche, be sure to monitor and optimize your website speeds, always provide helpful information to your audience, and don’t make your site complicated to navigate.

What To Expect, If You’re Expecting To Blog Full Time.

here's what to expect

Don’t expect to earn a full time income from your first year blogging. This is a marathon, not a sprint. You are building a business and this will take time for the average person to see enough income to give up their day job. It will not happen overnight, but when you do start earning an income, the profits will usually start compounding and you will earn more and more every month until the eventual plateau where it evens out.

How much you need to supplement a full time income is completely up to you. I suggest that you keep your day job until you are positive that your new blog will remain consistent. By the time it is earning enough to replace your current income, you will know if it can produce the same profits consistently over time.

If you opt to create an authority site, you will be creating a job for yourself. By being an authority blog, you will be putting yourself in a position that requires your presence regularly. People will need answers to questions, and if you’re selling information products, they may request refunds or need help with receiving the information. There are many ups and downs to creating an authority blog, so weigh your options before jumping in.

Create a niche blog. By narrowing in on a specific niche, you will limit the interaction needed from you, and this will put you in a better position to earn a truly passive full time income online. Most people struggle with selecting the niche, and I am subject to that myself, but it doesn’t have to be over complicated. Choose something your already passionate about or would like to learn more about, and then start adding value.

You will eventually want to give up. Maybe you feel the learning curve is to steep, your not a good writer, or your just not getting the traffic and your afraid you never will. Don’t give up. Patience and persistence will be the major determining factors in your success. Learn all you can, and keep pushing forward. Don’t worry about your traffic until you are getting it and stay focused on providing quality, helpful content.

    • You are very welcome and thank You.

There is no way to truly get anything for free, and often times, the price is your most valuable asset, time. Time is the one thing that is consistent across the world, and it is the greatest asset that we must sacrifice now, so that we may enjoy our later years with ease and freedom. I would rather spend three years turning my blog into a full time income, and learning everything I can along the way, then to work a 9-5 for the rest of my life, just to retire broke or never retire at all. I want my freedom as early as I can earn it, and to me, three years would be a small price when considering that I could have spent the rest of my life making someone else rich while I was still, always broke. There is no such thing as job security and we are all replaceable, so I believe it is the smartest decision to build something more for yourself and do while your still young enough to enjoy the rest of your life. This age will be different for everybody and I believe that it is never to late. The key is to get started now. The longer you wait, the less time you have, and the more likely you are to give up on this dream. Don’t wait, Get Started Today!
      To Your Success,

  3. Hi Darren,
Thanks a lot for such a wonderful and informative article. You are absolutely right and I agree with you that to earn a full-time income by Blogging takes efforts and a bit time, so we need to take patience for this matter. We shouldn’t forget this is (Online business/Blog) going to be our digital assets as well, so we must keep patience and keep motivated. We always need proper training to do something. Blogging or online business is not different, we must have to be well trained and Wealthy affiliate is one of the best platforms where anyone from beginner to professional can get help to be successful either Blogging or establish their online business.

    • Thank You for your response. You are absolutely right about how needing to stay motivated and having patience to see this through to success, and that was the point I was getting at with this article. I want people who are just getting started online, to start with realistic expectations and to know that just because they have not seen success within the first few months, does not mean they have failed.

Any business pursuit will take a lot of time and dedication to make it a reality, and while it is not always completely free, starting your own blog is one of the lowest barrier to entry careers that you can start today. And just as you have also said, Wealthy Affiliate is the best place to learn the ropes. They add value at every turn through the process from getting started to being successful. Their platform allows for the option to start for absolutely free and try before you buy. That single option is the greatest advantage to those who may wonder if they will have the required patience to achieve online success, or they are just not sure if this is a path they would like to follow, but they would still like to try.

There is a lot to learn before anyone will make it to a full time income from any online business, but Wealthy Affiliate and myself will be happy to help anyone, with the passion for their freedom, to achieve it. Thanks again for reading and responding.
